Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) are founded on state-of-the-art research and technology in transportation, infrastructure and networks and ensure safe, fast and comfortable movement of people and goods in smart cities and communities.

In the evolution towards vehicle autonomy and the empowerment of the mobile citizen, interconnection (Connected ITS, C-ITS) and awareness (Conscious Connected ITS, CC-ITS) in decision-making are essential. The holistic understanding and optimal interpretation of values and situations about people, objects and vehicles is sought for drastically improved transport and road safety.

The challenge mainly concerns the application of CC-ITS in dynamic transport and traffic systems, digital data management (big data & IoT), cyber privacy (blockchain), intermodality, safety & security, communications (5G+), intelligent information and management, and environmental and health impacts.

In addition to the above, contributions are encouraged in:

Computer science applications – a key pillar of CC-ITS based on holistic computational logic for richer cognition. This can be achieved through multidimensional dynamic modelling and forecasting, and augmented spatiotemporal detection, drones and satellites.

Environmental modeling and forecasting contributes to intelligent monitoring, information and decision-making in air quality and environmental incidents. This can increase the reliability of real-time urban climate and mobility prediction.

Psychology and behavioral modeling benefits from smart cities and intelligent transport systems data. Through IoT technologies and intelligent data management, these models increase the potential for safety and security in intermodal travel and urban mobility.

Architecture and urban planning offer foundations for integrating CC-ITS in urban areas, as they help harmonize new infrastructure, as in the design of multi-dimensional mobility corridors, and reconfiguration of public spaces and buildings to share mobility space.

This is a unique opportunity for those who wish to participate with a live presentation. The conference brings together stakeholders including interdisciplinary professionals from civil engineering, electrical & electronics engineering, communications, computer science, architecture, urban planning, informatics, physics & air quality, economics, psychology.

Together we share and explore the potential for expanded cooperation of the above sectors within the society of consciousness. Students, researchers, PhD candidates, engineers, and professionals from the above or related fields are strongly encouraged to submit abstracts on their research and applications in the broader thematic context of intelligent, consciousness-oriented transportation systems.


The conference will be organized by the University of Patras, Department of Civil Engineering, in cooperation with ITS Hellas, with the support of the Hellenic Institute of Transportation Engineers and Aimsun, under the auspices of the Hellenic Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport.

The University of Patras was founded in the city of Patras in 1964 as a self-administered Academic Institution under the supervision of the Greek Government. The University was established primarily with the intention to concentrate on science, technology, economics, business administration and social sciences. ITS Hellas, the “Hellenic Organization of Intelligent Transport Systems”, is a nonprofit organization, founded in 2011. Since then ITS Hellas has been operating as the national platform for Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) in Greece, aiming to create the right conditions for the development and promotion of Greek technological solutions achieving maximum efficiency in transport. The ITS Hellas consists of 34 members from the public sector (eg TRAINOSE, OASA, SASTH etc.), the private sector and the academic/research world.

Hellenic Institute of Transportation Engineers

Hellenic Institute of Transportation Engineers was founded in 1976 in Athens, Greece. It currently includes over 600 members, all of them holding a postgraduate degree in transportation and carrying a long experience in the subject matter. The Institute has also acted as Advisor to various public authorities and public corporations and is widely considered as an expert counterpart for supporting decision making, given its impartiality and scientific approach to implementing and solving problems in the transport sector.

Doctor in Physical Sciences. 1986-2014 Professor of the Department of Statistics and Operations Research at the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC); principal fields of interest Traffic and Transport Modeling, Transport Planning, Optimization, and Simulation

Techniques in Transportation and their applications to City Logistics and Intelligent Transportation Systems, has more than 45 years of experience on research and software development in the field of transport modeling. Between 2007 and 2015, Scientific Director of the Transport and ICT Projects at InLab FIB (http://inlab.fib.upc.edu) of UPC and Director of the Master in Logistics, Transport, and Mobility of UPC. Between 2015 and 2016 Academic Director of CARNET (www.carnet.barcelona). Author of more than 140 papers published in Technical Journals, Conference Proceedings with peer review, and chapters in technical books on transportation, editor of the Springer book “Fundamentals of Traffic Simulation”. In 1985  set up LIOS (Laboratori d’Investigació Operativa i Simulació) under his direction, and developed the microscopic traffic simulator Aimsun. As director of LIOS since 1989 was the principal researcher of the UPC team in more than 25 projects of the R&D Framework Programs of the European Union, and others from the National &D projects. 2017-2020 Strategic Advisor to PTV Group (www.ptvgroup.com) on Transport Models.

Keynote Speakers


Petros A. Ioannou received BSc degree from University College, London in 1978 and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Illinois, Urbana, Illinois, in 1980 and 1982, respectively. In 1982, he joined the Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Southern California (USC) where he is currently the A.V. ‘Bal’ Balakrishnan Chair Professor. He is the founder and Director of the Center of Advanced Transportation Technologies and co- founder and Associate Director for Research of METRANS, a University Transportation Center. He holds courtesy appointments with the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering and the Department of Industrial Systems Engineering. He is the founder and Director of the Master Program on Financial Engineering at (USC). He is a Lifetime Fellow of IEEE and Fellow of IFAC, AAAS and the author/co-author of 9 books and over 400 research papers in the areas of controls and intelligent transportation systems. He is the VP for membership activities of the IEEE ITS Society and served as Editor in Chief of the IEEE Transactions on ITS. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, Foreign Member of Academy Europaea and European Academy of Sciences and Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors.




Dr. Evangelos I. Kaisar is a Professor and Chair of the  Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatics Engineering at Florida Atlantic University. In addition, Dr. Kaisar is the Director of the Freight Mobility Research Institute (FMRI) a USDOT TIER 1 Transportation Center.  He holds a BS degree in civil engineering from Greece and a BS, MS and a Ph.D. degree in civil engineering from the University of Maryland at College Park. Prior to coming to Florida Atlantic University, he was a project manager for the Maryland Transportation Authority (MdTA). Dr. Kaisar is an expert in transportation systems analysis, large scale mathematical modeling, traffic management, logistics, and preparedness catastrophic events management. Dr. Kaisar has over twenty years of experience in research and education, as well as, vast experience in managing research programs and administrative expertise. He has completed many research projects for several sponsors including Florida Department of Transportation, Federal Transit Administration, Federal Highway Administration, Federal Emergency management Agency (FEMA), and the Department of Homeland Security. He has served as a member in many Transportation Research Board (TRB) committees. Since joining FAU faculty he has led transportation research projects in urban transportation planning, air transport systems modeling, inventory control, freight logistics and supply chain management and resilience,  He is also a member of the TRB standing committee on Evacuation Committee (ABR30), Freight Transportation Planning and Logistics (AT015) and Intermodal Freight Transport (AT045), American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE), ITS America, and the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences. Dr. Kaisar is also serving as a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of Transportation Research and is currently Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Intelligent Transportation Systems.
